Practice of culture/nature non-discrimination
Materials: photographic plates, steel, aluminum, plexiglass, galvanized steel sheet, LED strip, quartz sand, silicon, 2020
the project was made in collaboration with Daria Trofimova and presented as part of the self-organized collective exhibition “The Giredmet experiences" in the former building of the Research Institute of Giredmet in Moscow
Photographic plates presented on one of three stands are artifacts of micrographic studies of defects in Monocrystalline Silicon and its alloys with other semiconductors, carried out at the Research Institute Giredmet **. On the second stand were used materials produced by a similar method, but on a different material. They are devoted to the study of the production processes of microplankton, which were carried out at the biological station "Dalnie Zelentsy" ** at the extreme northern mainland point of Russia in the village of the same name. Thus, the first stand is filled with mineral structures, while the second one consists of organic ones.
The third stand consists of the set of images created on the basis of both types of visual micro-data, interweaving of organic and inorganic structures. The algorithm used to generate the images is something like neural recognition in reverse, or, as it is often defined, visualization of the operation of a neural network. With the help of this algorithm, in some cases, the microstructures of mineral compounds were isolated and taken as a basis for organic matter and vice versa. These images were transferred to photographic plates in the same way that scientists used when conducting micrographic studies. Thus, three stands give us a visualization of two views: scientific, structuring matter on organic and inorganic, living and nonliving, and the so-called computer vision, which, using the same visual codes, breaks these oppositions.
* This work is the second in the series of experiments on constructing the author's symbiotic constructs of nondiscrimination between natural and artificial.
** Both institutions were disbanded. Demolition of the entire Giredmet building complex began immediately after the exhibition on September 20, 2020. The Dalnie Zelentsy biological station is abandoned and empty.
